Ruka Retreat

This past Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we had our first Ruka retreat. Sarah was the main coordinator for this day and did a fantastic job. Since it was MLK day, we spent our morning volunteering at Caritas Village. After we finished with all the chores we were assigned at Caritas, which mainly included deep cleaning, we ate a delicious Caritas lunch. After lunch we stayed for a vigil which was held in honor of all of the homicides in the Memphis area in 2010. I think I can speak for us all when I say that this was a very sobering experience. Participants read off the names, ages, and reason for the person’s death. This made us realize how many deaths were due to things such as domestic violence, arguments, or even negligence. Although it was a sad experience, I was grateful that we were able to be a part of that experience.

After our morning at Caritas, we came back to the Ruka to relax and do some bonding over a movie. The movie of choice: “17 Again”. That’s right. It was Awesome! It was a silly and very entertaining and I think we were able to laugh about how ridiculous it was. After the movie we participated in our first art project as a community. Sarah purchased 6 small canvases, paint, and paint brushes. Our assignment was basically just to paint whatever we wanted; we all used the same 4 colors so that all of our paintings were different, but were also similar in that their colors were all the same. We realized very quickly how much of each of our personalities shined through our paintings. After looking at the finished product we felt as though it was immediately evident who painted which painting, so we will see if our guests will be able to tell as easily as we canJ.

After the art project we ate dinner which was Camy’s delivery pizza- AMAZING- while watching another movie (we were in a movie mood). The movie of choice this time: “Up”. I personally had never seen “Up” and I thought it was a great movie. I cried, of course, but I think so did mostly everyone else, so I didn’t feel so bad about it. After the movie we finished off our night with a meeting to discuss potential applicants for the Ruka. This is a very exciting process for us all as we see new members who are interested in continuing this project that we have put some much into this past year. But there will be more about that coming soon I’m sure….
